We provide measurements for all of your vital stats: bust, under-bust, waist, hip, total length, and sleeve length (when applicable). The bust measurement is taken over the fullest part of the chest (‘A’ in the diagram to the right), the under-bust measurement is taken over the fullest part of the ribcage, just under the breasts (‘B’). The waist measurement indicates the natural waist (‘C,’ about 8 inches down from the under-bust), and the hip is measured over the lap, at the fullest point. All measurements are taken with the garment laid flat—the measurement you’re provided with, in the item description, is that measurement, doubled (lengths being the obvious exception).

When measuring knit fabrics (e.g. rayon jersey, nylon tricot) that have some stretch to them, we always offer measurements in a range (for example: 34” – 38” comfortably). Some of us like our nylon gowns tighter in the bodice than others (yours truly for instance). Ranged measurements do not reflect the maximum stretch unless indicated (we’re not stuffing sausages after all!). It’s important to know your measurements (unless you’re very experienced with sizing for a certain period, maker, etc.) because sizing indications vary from one era to another. Measuring a similar article of clothing is a good way to determine if an item will fit/flatter you, but don’t be afraid to contact us about sizing—we’re happy to help and have quite a bit of experience fitting all types of figures. . . and we’re sweet, sweet as pie.

Please feel free to contact us with questions about garment care, fabrics and finishes. We love to talk shop!
